Most British readers have probably heard about the case of Sheffield United and Wales striker Ched Evans who has been jailed for five years for raping a teenager. And dead right too, you’re probably saying. But there are a few strange, not to say bizarre, things about this particular rape. The girl apparently was 'too drunk to consent' to sex. Maybe. But earlier in the evening , as CCTV footage showed, she approached Evans’ friend Clayton McDonald, then, having made his acquaintance was seen flagging down a taxi into which she and McDonald entered.
Now, late at night, you’re in a drunken state, you chat up a footballer, get with him into a taxi that you have flagged down. I wonder where she thought she was going? The British Museum? A medieval poetry reading? Well, you’ll be amazed to hear that they headed off to a hotel where they had sex. On the way to the hotel McDonald rang up Evans and told him he ’had a bird’ and invited him along. Now presumably the ‘bird’ overheard this invitation. In any event, Evans came along and he too had sex with her.
Was this rape? Well the girl says she remembers nothing, which begs the question: how did the police got involved and how did it became a rape case at all? But that’s not the best part of it. You see although both men had sex with the inebriated woman, and Evans’s career is now effectively ruined, McDonald was acquitted. Let me repeat: McDonald was acquitted
This lead to Daily Mail reader Stuart from West Yorkshire asking “Don't see how two men can have sex with a women who was too intoxicated to consent yet only one of them was found guilty of rape because of her intoxication and the other was freed. How does that work?”
Well Stuart, happily I can be of assistance here. And the explanation comes by way of a photo of the two men. Take a close look. Now do you understand , Stuart? In case you’re a bit slow on the uptake, Evans is a white male, and McDonald is black. Now do you see?
This grotesque distortion of justice underlines once again an important issue for all of us. It’s this. Will such outrages have the effect of – at some stage – galvanising white men into a rebellion against the injustices heaped on them for two generations? Or will they just sink further into the new Orwellian reality that has been created with them in mind? I fear the latter. Look at how the British working class male has been eviscerated and emasculated over the last fifty years. Abused, mocked and denigrated. Yet he’s taken it all and in fact, if you read the comments to the article (filtered no doubt, but still….) you’ll find no shortage of British men supporting what happened.
And incidentally, I haven’t seen a single comment that raises the racial aspect of the verdict. Not one.
I don’t know the answer, but I'm not optimistic.
