Google does irony

Well, I see our friends in Google have put it up to the Chinese. They don't like all this censorship stuff. Google believes that people should be allowed say and write what they want. Without hindrance, or without vetting. All comment freely available. It's a free world and all that.

Most commendable. And indeed they've received the desired plaudits from an admiring world and a grateful Chinese public. Which was the whole idea.

But whence this new-found commitment to freedom of speech? They certainly don't do free speech if the God of Political Correctness is angered. Now I modestly concede that the Irish Savant site doesn't have the same geopolitical significance as the state of China. Still, as Google I'm sure would be the first to say, freedom is indivisible.

So if you're an observant type you'll have noticed a Google health warning as you entered this site. That puts a lot of potential readers off. More significantly, since I was perceived as offending the PC deity, Google have literally removed this site from their searches. For example, if, two years ago you had entered "Ireland, immigration, race" into the search engine, my site would have come close to the top, certainly somewhere in the first page. Do it now and you'll find it hard to get any results.

This is Google's idea of freedom of speech. The same as the rest of the so-called liberals. You're free to say anything you want................. as long as we agree with it.

And just for the record, there is no way that Google will pull out of China. This whole thing is just a ploy to get some good publicity, browny points for their 'do no evil' motto, to be followed by a quiet face-saving formula whereby things will continue as before.

Hypocrisy doesn't do it justice.

Savant, in my case when I saw the warning I was intrigued and looked forward to lots of controversial articles. Though you are an excellent writer, I may not have remembered to link to your site were it not for the warning!

UBN - interesting angle. But I do know that a lot of people won't come after the warning on as they think it's a porno site.

Hibernia Girl did disappear but nothing sinister. She went to college full time.

@ SAVANT

I think anonymous 16:50 meant Hibernia Girl's blogsite is no longer accessible.

Hi Savant. My feelings are exactly the same as Unrepentant British Nationalist above.

I came to your site via a link from the old SAS, and upon hitting the warning, thought to myself:- "Who are these pissheads to tell me what I may or may not read ...?"

The rest as they say, is history.

More and more power to your pen and to your readers.

Kinda funny watching ol' censoring, censor-enabling Google waxing pious about free-speech infractions. Correct me if my memory is failing me, but, aside from censoring non-PC content on its own services, wasn't Google perfectly willing to go along to get along in the censor/suppression business to make some dosh in China? My guess is that Goog, like other foreign corps, is getting miffed that China tolerates/encourages blatant IP rip-off and is more interested in using MNCs to push the development of its own national companies, than in rolling over like stupid Americans and letting foreign companies establish and maintain market share at the expense of Chinese businesses.

Guess a little self-aggrandizing, self-righteous posturing is a whore's natural response to realizing she's been had. Love a lot of your products, Google, but the outraged virgin act is a bit rich.

Well, that's good news to hear that the warning only piqued your interest. However, the people who read this blog are, I guess, well, the kind of people who give the finger to health warnings. The pity I think is that by disappearing off the search engine the message isn't reaching so many more.

Re Hibernia Girl, I didn't know that the site was unavailable. Well, another one bites the dust....

Hibernia Girl disappeared this January, it was there in December.

I noticed that a prominent feminist died and the site disappeared about the same time.
