Nigerians: A response (2)

Good comment here from Rohan Swee.

"The poster who mentioned how priviliged irish people are to be born in a white western country is spot on. Because after God created all the peoples of the earth, he scattered them about randomly over the face of the planet, and some of them got lucky and were plopped into the cushy white western countries, that came ready-made with maintained roads, functioning social and political institutions, rule of law, that sort of thing.

Others, not so lucky, landed in crapholes. Your commenter makes it sound as if some white western Martians just gifted the lucky dog Irish with their country. And it's all so unfair, since those good things were just there for the taking in Western Europe and some other completely random places, and don't in the least bit represent the cultural work and sacrifice of centuries, that the workers and sacrificers might have wanted to pass on to their own posterity.

Nope, the fickle finger of fate just happened to plop coincidentally-named white western people into mysteriously unconnected white western countries. If we moved all of Nigeria to Hibernia, and transferred the Irish to Nigeria, I'm sure the Irish would be clamoring to live amongst the transplanted Nigerians now, wouldn't they? (Or would we just see some acceleration in the rate of development of advanced sunblock technology?)"

Spot on, would you not agree?

A good comment. You always here they never received equal opportunities and if they had been given equal opportunities our societies would be the same.

The fact of the matter is that their societies never developed as rapidly to create those opportunities.

> When the first settlers arrived they had more sophisticated weapons and inventions which allowed them to obtain power over the land. African society was conflict orientated at the time with rival tribes constantly attacking and defending against their opposition e.g. Zulus, Xhosa, Shonas, Ndebele, the reign of Shaka Zulu etc. So their lack of developed weapons was not as a result of a lack of need for them. Necessity is the mother of invention - so I guess they have sterile needs!

> Access to education and resources is argued. Who do they think taught Western nations? They taught themselves. Africans did not create an effective knowledge base (on useful topics) and an effective method of transferring that knowledge between consecutive generations. Their society failed to create educational opportunities for themselves.

At the end of the day we must have started at the same point and their societies did not develop as quickly. If you believe in evolution and origin of man being Kenya then their societies had the head start.

Maybe the explanation lies in climate. I saw a documentary where they made mine workers do simple tests under high temperatures and humid conditions; the result was they completed the test quicker but they were less accurate with their answers when compared to normal cool conditions. Maybe after generations and thousands of years of intense climates the overall impact on societal decisions was more flawed than in cooler climates?

You could be right anonymous. Richard Lynn has come up with a range of possibilities. Interestingly, he takes the opposite view to you re IQ. He feels the cold helped people develop better.

If he feels the cold helped people develop better than he shares the same view as me.

I think the hot/humid climates of Africa over thousands of years and generations had a cumulative negative impact on their society and it headed in a less constructive direction.

Yes, I agree. Eskimos, Mongolians, Greenlanders and Basothos in the snowy Lesotho Highlands kick ass !

I think the hot/humid climates of Africa over thousands of years and generations had a cumulative negative impact on their society and it headed in a less constructive direction.

Other places also had hot/humid climates.
For example, the Incas and the Aztecs didn't do too badly (although they never invented the wheel and depleted their gene pool of their brightest and most attractive people via human sacrifices). Nor did the Arabs, Ancient Egyptians, Persians and Indians. I mean, India is fucking hot and humid, yet they had impressive architecture and a writing system thousands of years ago.

Way to point out the extremes - Alaska, I would be talking about an ideal climate range and not out lying climates.

Maybe it is lack of water and hydration that lead to their beautiful societies.

By the way...that climates thing was not meant to be taken seriously! It was trying to highlight the fact that I cannot make sense of why African society seems to fail time and time again.
